Janice Pyke
IKD Executive Secretary and IKD Director, PEI, 8th Dan (Tai Chi Instructor)
Shihan Janice Pyke.
I began practicing Tai Chi in the fall of 2014, drawn to its slow, flowing, and dance-like movements. Coming from a background in Karate, the transition presented certain challenges. However, over time, I have come to appreciate that Tai Chi and Karate share more similarities than differences, particularly in principles such as balance, structure, discipline, and internal focus.
Shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic, I began instructing Tai Chi. Despite the challenges posed by lockdowns, I continued to develop as both a practitioner and a teacher. I currently teach three and a half hours per week and have been honoured with the appointment of Regional Instructor for the Maritimes.
The “empty cup” philosophy remains central to my approach, continually reminding me to remain open to learning as I refine my own technique and guide others in their practice. It is deeply rewarding to witness students grow in confidence, skill, and understanding through their Tai Chi journey.
